Juggling Responsibilities
College is a time of change. There’s an increase in work load and more organizations available to join. It can seem overwhelming to do school and also be involved. When it comes to choosing what to involve yourself in, always look for things you’re passionate about! It’s easier to give your time and energy to things your heart genuinely cares about.
I’m personally the QUEEN of over-committing. I used to joke it was one of my personality traits, and honestly, sometimes I still do. I want to be involved in any and everything, but that’s not possible to do when there are so many things to worry about, like homework, exams, and finals. It’s hard to find a good balance, but it’s possible! Here’s how I balanced my life:
A Planner
Everyone needs one, whether it’s on your phone or an actual book (I recommend the Erin Condren planners, they’re awesome!). Use it to write-out, at the beginning of every week, the things you need to get done and their due dates. It helps to stay organized so you won’t find out about an assignment the day of and have very little time to finish it. Set aside specific days or times you are going to study and commit to those days or times. If you set aside these times, you’ll find you still have time to do other things during the week as well! A planner will help ease your stress and also keep you organized. Just make sure you check it daily!
It’s OK to say NO!
Even though you may want to, it’s impossible to say yes to everything that comes into your path and actually have the time to give it your all. Look hard at what you’re involved in, and be honest with people about not having extra time! Everyone is busy…it’s understandable to have to say no to some things! It’s also okay to stay in some nights, whether for school purposes or for your own mental health. Everyone needs a night off sometimes!
Make time for YOU!
Go blueberry picking with some friends.
Take a walk outside to get some fresh air.
Work out.
Read that book you’ve been wanting to read.
Take your eno and go sit somewhere pretty (like The Refuge!!).
Paint with watercolors.
Listen to music.
Take a bath.
Bake your favorite cake (I vote strawberry!).
Watch your favorite movie.
Have those deep talks with your friends.
Do a face mask.
Get your nails done.
Do what makes you happy! You know what recharges you, and sometimes you just have to set aside the time to do this. I know it’s tough to take a break from work, but if you give yourself a minute to breathe, it will make a huge difference on how you look at life and your responsibilities!
