A True Sisterhood
First, I would love to introduce myself! My name is AP Spees, and I am from Tupelo, MS. I rushed Chi Omega at Auburn University and completed my freshman year there before transferring to Mississippi State University for my sophomore year. Rushing out-of-state at Auburn was a bit overwhelming, as I am sure my fellow out-of-state girls would understand, but the girls at the Alpha Beta chapter of Chi Omega made rush one of the best experiences of my life.
Although I never expected to be transferring schools and sorority chapters, I chose to move to do so to be closer to my family in Tupelo. My sisters at Auburn and Mississippi State made me feel loved throughout my time at Auburn and decision to move to Starkville. My transfer process and decision is another story (and I would be more than happy to share that with you, too), but today I want to share with you my experience of sisterhood within Chi Omega.
As a transfer from another SEC school and an affiliate of the Phi Delta Chapter of Chi Omega, I am incredibly grateful for the sisterhood that has been provided through the girls I get to call my sisters. I will have to admit, I was nervous about joining a new community and stepping into the unknown at MSU, but the girls of Chi Omega made me feel right at home.
The Lord guided me throughout my transition to State and instantly placed me in the hands of girls that pursued me with love and inclusion. Not only did God provide me with the chance to live in Hathorn with girls in my new pledge class, but He surrounded me by so many people that have changed me for good. He provided me with a pledge sister as a roommate that constantly included me, introduced me to other girls, and made me feel at home at the university and within the chapter.
Our president at the time also introduced me to my new sisters and explained what sisterhood meant to her, personally, and the Phi Delta Chapter as a whole. From then on, I was lucky enough to experience the sisterhood of Phi Delta myself!
I will never forget walking into the MSU Chi Omega house on the first day of Recruitment 2019. As an affiliate, I had the opportunity to stand on the sidelines and watch my new sisters greet the potential new members with the same kindness they had shared with me. Each day throughout the week, I met many girls just like me and many girls that I wanted to be more like. I was constantly approached with smiles by girls whose intention was to truly get to know me. I specifically remember receiving words of encouragement by those who would soon become my best friends.
This type of kindness is exactly what made me “choose wisely” and choose Chi Omega in the first place. I never quite understood the true definition of sisterhood that was described throughout the recruitment process until now. From my experience, this is how I define sisterhood—to be loved and accepted no matter where you are. That is how Chi Omega makes me feel every day. The presence of this sisterhood has been incredibly impactful in my life, especially through my transfer, and will continue to stick forever. Chi Omega is a sisterhood, no matter where you are.
