Why I Went Greek
Growing up in Starkville, Greek Life was a constant presence in my life. I think back and I remember being in middle school(I know, that’s so early) and girls in my classes were already talking about which sorority they would want to be in. In addition to that, I remember my mom, my dad, and my grandparents talking about their memories from college and participating Greek life. Every year in August, I would hear who joined which sorority. Every year, I would see new pictures from Bid Day, date parties, philanthropy events, or just sisters enjoying time with one another.
Even knowing how great and amazing Greek life was growing up, it wasn’t until Christmas of my junior year that I was convinced and really decided I wanted to go through recruitment. My best friend and mentor, who participated in Greek life herself, was having some of her sisters over just to hang out for one night because they were all in town. Because I was already at her house, she invited me to stay.
Every girl that I met that night just made me feel so welcome and cared for. They were all so accomplished and had incredible dreams for their careers. I could see just how much they meant to one another. I wanted that. I wanted a group of friends I could depend on, a group that would lift me up and support me. I wanted a sisterhood.
Throughout my senior year of highschool, I was constantly shown just how amazing Greek Life is. I got to see some of my best friends become a part of these amazing sororities and grow as people, as students, and as friends.
Going Greek was the BEST decision I made my freshman year!
For anyone who is nervous or unsure about Greek Life, don’t be! I know that’s cliche, but it’s cliche for a reason. There is no cookie-cutter mold you have to fit into. Just be yourself, and you’ll find something incredible!
